Raising Health Awareness in El Fasher: A Step Toward Dignity for Displaced Families

In the heart of conflict-affected El Fasher, amidst the struggles of displacement and uncertainty, Relief Care Alliance (RCA) is bringing light through awareness and community care. At the Omdurman Islamic University gathering site, which shelters displaced families from Zam Zam, RCA conducted its first health and environmental awareness workshop—a milestone in a region marked by hardship and resilience.
The workshop focused on empowering internally displaced persons (IDPs) with practical knowledge and simple, life-saving practices. Through interactive sessions, RCA’s team guided participants on how to protect their families from preventable diseases—an especially urgent need in temporary shelter conditions where overcrowding and poor sanitation increase health risks.
Key areas of focus included:
- Hand hygiene as a frontline defense against infectious diseases
- Environmental cleanliness to maintain safe living conditions
- Proper use of latrines to prevent disease outbreaks
- Daily personal hygiene to improve overall well-being
“We didn’t know how dangerous simple habits could be until this workshop. Now we understand how to protect ourselves and our children,”
— A participant from Zam Zam
The impact was clear. Over 150 households directly benefited, gaining not only knowledge but confidence. Many expressed gratitude for the hands-on approach and accessible language used throughout the sessions.
“This kind of support means more than just information—it means someone sees us, someone cares,”
— Community Elder, El Fasher
Despite the ongoing challenges, RCA continues to stand beside displaced communities—not just with aid, but with sustainable solutions that uplift and empower.
This initiative is part of a broader RCA commitment to promote health, dignity, and resilience among Sudan’s most vulnerable populations. And while the conditions may be harsh, the voices from the field remind us that with knowledge, communities can lead their own change.
